About the Event

Does fabric theory make your brain hurt? Or does it make the puzzle nerd in you light up with excitement? Either way, understanding fabric theory makes you safer in the air. Memorizing steps can only take you so far—what happens when you forget a step? The consequences can be serious, especially if you are wrapping for a big drop. But when you truly understand the wraps, you’re far less likely to make mistakes. Fabric theory isn’t just about safety—it’s the key to creativity. Understanding fabric theory gives you the tools to build unique sequences, discover new skills, and safely explore the endless possibilities aerial silks have to offer. Note: While this workshop focuses on aerial silks fabric theory, many concepts can also apply to sling/hammock artists.

This 90-minute workshop will introduce you to new ways of understanding fabric theory whether you are relatively new to aerial arts or have years of experience. You’ll also learn tips and tricks for using fabric theory to create your own unique sequences! Bring a notebook or laptop for taking notes, but expect to spend plenty of time in the air too.

Prerequisites:

While this workshop is open to aerial artists of all levels, you will get the most out of it if you have familiarity with foundational aerial silks skills (such as footlocks, hip key, thigh hitch, belay, and crossback) so you can apply the fabric theory concepts in the workshop to skills you know.

Zoom Video Recording Option:

We've had a lot of requests from people wanting to receive a video recording of this workshop. This option is now available! When you register, choose the video Recording option, and you will be emailed a link to the recording on Monday 2/24. The video link will remain active for 3 months.

About the Instructor:

Michelle Spurlock is the owner and founder of Upside Aerial Arts & Fitness. She has trained in aerial arts for 15 years and taught and performed professionally since 2016. Before becoming a full-time aerialist, Michelle was a pharmacy professor, and she loves applying her academic background to teaching aerial arts. She is passionate about breaking down complicated concepts and making them accessible and understandable to everyone. Early in her aerial journey, she often felt that being a type A, left-brained nerd meant she would never be creative. But she has learned that creativity flourishes when grounded in knowledge.
